Mickey Mouse
Mickey Mouse is probably one of the best known cartoons of the western civilization, maybe even the world. But it was not always like this. Mickey Mouse was once a nosy, annoying ,trouble making mouse. He wasn't very well liked back then, where cartoons were more peaceful then the cartoons of today. Most of the humor in those cartoons was when something bad happened to a character, it was a accident. No one caused it to happen, it was just bad luck of the character. Now a days, its mostly a fight between two characters.the old Mickey Mouse started that revolution, as well as many others.
"You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality."
Mickey Mouse was actually created in 1928, when Walt was on his way back from Los Angeles. Walt was returning from a business trip, in which he had lost his copy write for Oswald the Rabbit, a cartoon he had made earlier. During the ride home, Disney started making a cartoon mouse that had red velvet pants. He had originally planned to name him Mortimer, but his wife convinced him to change the name to Mickey, saying that Mortimer was too stuffy. That same year, Mickey Mouse starred in his first animated film, Steamboat Willie, a short film about Mickey working on a steamboat. His captain assigned him boring jobs that he always managed to mess up/make more interesting and get into trouble. The episode ends with a bird that was mocking him the whole time being thrown into a river. This really is a turning point because it was a big hit and everyone loved it. He symbolized everything that Disney stood for in a positive and upbeat philosophy. Mickey mouse was now known everywhere in the U.S. and was quickly spreading around the world. The Age of the Mouse was born.
"Somehow I can't believe there are any heights that can't be scaled by a man who knows the secret of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C's. They are Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy and the greatest of these is Confidence. When you believe a thing, believe it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably."
Before Mickey Mouse, Felix the Cat was a big hit. He was the Mickey mouse of the early 1900's, so to say. He was a fun, happy, creative, adventurous, fun-loving, hard-working and intelligent character. He was considered the first character to have a personality. Movie critics everywhere loved him, and kids loved him even more. His silent films were a big success.
"Laughter is America's most important export."
Today, Mickey Mouse is normally dressed in red shorts with two buttons on the front, large yellow shoes, and his trademark white gloves. He sports a bulbous black nose, and he has large eyes. The only similarities he has to a real mouse are his large mouse ears, and his long, skinny tail. Other than those features, Mickey Mouse has his own distinctive look.
"We felt that the public, and especially the children, like animals that are cute and little. I think we are rather indebted to Charlie Chaplin for the idea. We wanted something appealing, and we thought of a tiny bit of a mouse that would have something of the wistfulness of Chaplin- a little fellow trying to do the best he could."
